Flooding

As the climate becomes more unsettled, floods have become more common. Is your business prepared?

Flood risk assessment

Businesses are more likely to be disrupted by floods than fires. Below is some advice on preparing your organisation for the UK’s most common natural disaster.

  • Find out from the Environmental Agency whether your premises are at risk from river or sea flooding.
  • Remember that even if you are nowhere near a sea or river, you could still be vulnerable to flash floods.
  • Consider flood protection products such as flood barriers.
  • Make sure valuables are kept above floor level.
  • Back up any important computer files and store them somewhere else.
  • Make sure you and your staff know how to shut of electricity, gas and water supplies.
  • Make sure electrical sockets are above flood level.
  • Insure your business against flooding.
  • Develop a flood plan and communicate this to employees.
  • Do not try to salvage items until you know that the area is safe.
