Swine Flu
Leaflets have been distributed to all households throughout the UK containing information on:
- what swine flu is and how it could spread
- what the UK government has done to prepare for a wider outbreak
- how you can protect yourself against flu and what to do if you have flu symptoms
Prevention
Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, disposing of the tissue as soon as possible and cleaning your hands as soon you can are important actions that can help prevent the spread of infection.
The messages of CATCH IT, BIN IT, KILL IT are simple:
- CATCH IT Germs spread easily. Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze.
- BIN IT Germs can live for several hours on tissues. Dispose of them as soon as possible.
- KILL IT Hands can transfer germs to any surface you touch. Wash your hands regularly with soap and hot water or a sanitiser gel.
Business
Businesses should consider the necessary changes they need to make, and raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease amongst employees, as well as knowing how to manage people with symptoms in the workplace. visit the Business Continuity section of this website.
Schools
Influenza spreads rapidly in schools and other closed communities. If schools and childcare settings close at the right time, it could significantly reduce the spread of infection and the number of children infected.
How can you find out if your child’s school is closing?
If possible, the school should contact you during the day to advise you of the coming closure, so that you can start to make plans. Otherwise you should be told when you collect your child at the end of the day, or your child will be given a letter to take home.
